Christmas Around The World
Did you know that Christmas was originally a religious holiday based around the Christian Calendar? Did you also know that not every country has Christianity as its national religion?
This means that for many nations around the world, Christmas is not a National holiday. There are also some places around the world where they do celebrate Christmas as a National holiday but that it isn’t on December 25th!
Santa wanted to share his knowledge with each and every one of you and show you some of the amazing and wonderful things he has seen, and continues to see, on his travels.
Through the month of December, we will travel to places like Australia, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Zambia and Oman to see how they celebrate Christmas….. If at all!!
Over the next few weeks we will also be throwing in little fun facts, sharing some fun and interesting information and of course how some of the traditions and how they came to be.
Do you have some traditions, facts or interesting information that you think the world would like to know? If so, contact us through the ‘contact us’ page and you may be lucky enough to have it published.
Fun Fact
On Christmas Eve, 24th December 1968, 3 astronauts ( Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders) were not tucked up at home in bed with their families awaiting Santa to come and visit but were on on Apollo 8, which was the first manned mission to the moon!
Leaving earth on December 21st , they approached the lunar orbit. Once they arrived, they orbited the moon 10 times (Dec 24th), held a live broadcast from space where they showed earth images of the earth and the moon as they could see it from their shuttle. They read some passages from the bible and then headed home.
Mission Controll were waiting eagerly to hear from the crew and know they were safe and the mission had been successful…… they were all in suspense until Christmas morning when Lovell radioed in to Mission Control and stated “Roger, please be informed there is a Santa Claus.”
The crew then landed in the Pacific Ocean on 27th December.
Did you know that the famous ‘Earthrise’ image was taken at this time by Anders.
